Parties for spirits

Charming Sausalito is a great place to spend a day, and can be easily reached on a beautiful ferry ride from San Francisco. This tranquil escape within Golden Gate Park is full of history, culture, and beauty. The Winchester Mystery House offers four different tours (more on each below), plus seasonal tours and scary encounters to be had. "Mythbusters," "Ghost Adventures," and "Ghost Brothers" have all produced programs about the House. It made its spectacular big-screen debut with the supernatural horror film "Winchester" in 2018, which tells a fictionalized version of the story behind the mansion. However, none are quite as strange as the story of the Winchester Mystery House, which has captured popular imagination for its unusual and sinister past.

Seasonal Tours

Unlock the secrets of the Winchester Mystery House and learn about Sarah Winchester’s vast Estate with all-new audio and content. The true nature of Winchester’s motivations is likely to remain a mystery. But as the video tour points out, the house she built was not only bizarre—it was innovative. Winchester loved to garden, so the conservatory featured an indoor watering system and wooden floorboards that could be lifted up to water plants resting below. Experience the Winchester Mystery House’s daily tour – Walk With Spirits – and explore the paranormal as explained through the Spiritualism movement.

The estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a California Historic State Landmark, a San Jose City Landmark, and is one of the leading attractions in the Bay Area. Nearly 100 years after the house opened for tours, millions of guests have visited Sarah Winchester’s beautiful home. We’ve been mentioned in many “Top Destination” lists around the world. Sarah Winchester was a woman of independence, drive, and courage who lives on in legend. And the mansion she built is world renowned as much for the many design curiosities and innovations (many ahead of their time) as it is for the reported paranormal activity that resides within these walls. Shortly after her husband’s death, Sarah left their home in New Haven, CT and moved out west to San Jose, CA.

For the first time ever, the Winchester Mystery House is offering guests unprecedented access to the world’s most bizarre mansion with an all-new tour —The Winchester Mystery House Immersive 360 Tour.

However, due to the exposed areas of the basement and the third floor, which require safety helmets, children under 5 are not permitted. It is recommended that children must be 5 and up and be able to walk unassisted. We do ask that any minor be accompanied with an adult at any time. Guests will be able to see the infamous rooms of Sarah’s stately mansion, known around the world as the Winchester Mystery House®, and see the bizarre attributes that give the mysterious mansion its name. Tragedy befell Sarah – her infant daughter died of a childhood illness and a few years later her husband was taken from her by tuberculosis.

Maybe you’re too afraid to actually step foot inside, for fear of ghostly encounters. Or maybe you’re simply quarantined—like the rest of us—for the foreseeable future and are hungry for some new form of entertainment, preferably of the spooky variety. The month-long, round-the-clock investigation included interviewing over 300 people regarding their experiences on the property, and analyzing every aspect of the environment for any unusual phenomena. In 2018, a horror film was made about the infamous house and the spirits said to live within. A massive earthquake struck the Bay Area in 1906 and toppled the top three stories of the house, damaging the other four stories along with it.

There, she bought an eight-room farmhouse and began what could only be described as the world’s longest home renovation, stopping only when Sarah passed on September 5, 1922. In 1881, William died of tuberculosis, leaving Sarah with a $20 million inheritance and ownership in half of the Winchester company, making her one of the wealthiest women in the United States. Sarah’s mother and father-in-law died in the same year, after which she almost exclusively wore black mourning clothes.
